Try These Troubleshooting Tips If Your AC Is Acting Up

It’s summertime in the Inland Empire, and that means the heat of summer is not far behind. Is your home’s cooling system ready for hotter weather? If you are unsure of the answer to that question, it’s time to schedule a tune-up. Schedule regular maintenance with Sanborn’s service professionals. In the meantime, you can also help yourself if your system is not working properly or at all.
Here are a few HVAC troubleshooting tasks/tips if your system will not turn on or if the air conditioner is not cooling:

  • At the top of the list is verifying that your HVAC system has power. Locate the service panel and make sure the A/C circuit breaker has not tripped. Turn the circuit breaker off, wait about 10 seconds and switch it back on. If it trips again, call our company for immediate service before trying again.
  • Next check the thermostat, which controls the operation of the system. Some thermostats receive power via the electrical system, while others run on batteries. Remove and replace batteries, if applicable, and set the thermostat to cool mode. Adjust the thermostat setting 3 to 5 degrees below the room temperature and check for cool air after waiting for 30 seconds. If you system is still not responding, you may have a bad thermostat.
  • Check to see if there is ice or heavy condensation on your outdoor unit or refrigeration line. This issue could mean that your system is low on refrigerant or has a system leak. The unit must be thawed before our technicians can work on it, so turn the system off at the thermostat and put it in fan mode.
  • Always make sure to perform air filter maintenance. If your filter is a permanent one, clean it  per the owner’s manual instructions. Replace disposable air filters with new ones.
